Chennai: The low pressure has crossed the coast between Chennai and Puducherry this morning, bringing relief to officials and people. However, the IMD has predicted rains for northern Tamilnadu today.
Meanwhile, the red alert for Chennai and neighbouring districts has been changed to orange.
Earlier, a red alert was issued to these districts and a 20-member NDRF team was rushed to Tiruvallur district as a preventive measure to undertakeĀ relief and restoration works.
Schools and colleges in several districts have declared a holiday for today in view of the heavy rains.
Meanwhile, incessant rains lashed Chennai city, suburbs and several southern districts and western regions since yesterday.
The spells were heavy at times leading to water-logging in low lying areas in the city and suburbs.
As the met office had forecast extremely heavy rains, the Greater ChennaiĀ Corporation officials had appealed to the people to keep enough stockĀ of essentials like milk, curd, vegetables for the next two days and advised
them not to venture out of their houses.
