Chennai: Two successive new Low Pressure (LP) areas will form over the Bay of Bengal today and tomorrow, the Indian Meterological Department (IMD) has said.
A bulletin issued by the IMD said while a LP will form over the south Andaman sea today, another LP will form over East-Central Arabian sea off Maharashtra coast on 1 December.
The met office earlier forecast that the LP area over the South Andaman sea was expected to form yesterday. But it was delayed by a day. This system will move west-northwastwards and concentrate into a depression over southeast and adjoining east central bay of bengal during the subsequent 48 hours.
According to early indications, this system is likely to move towards Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Jharkhand.
IMD officials said they are closely monitoring the system that would form over the Arabian sea and its movement.
After pounding the north coastal districts, heavy rain might shift to south coastal districts of Tamilnadu from today.
The intense of the rainfall was expected to decrease gradually from today as the cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area and the adjoining Sri Lanka coast in the lower level might move and emerge in the Arabian Sea.
Chennai and other coastal districts are expected to get light to moderate rains.
Meanwhile, intermittent rains lashed Chennai city and suburbs since Sunday night. As the day progressed, sun came out briefly though the sky remained generally cloudy.
The reduction in rains might have come as a huge respite for the people of the city, but several areas in the city and suburbs continued to remain inundated as the rain water has not receded.
Traffic moved at a slow pace in several places as motorists found it tough to negotiate the rain battered roads.
Meanwhile, North coastal districts received heavy rains with Cuddalore, bearing the brunt, recording 17.3 cm in a short span of five hours, followed by Puducherry 11.2 cm, Parangipettai (10.6 cm) and Nagapattinam (8 cm).
