Chennai: A young medical aspirant committed suicide after he failed to clear the NEET exams at Puzhal near here in adjoining Tiruvallur district of Tamilnadu.
The incident came to light Friday when the student Sujith was found hanging at his house.
Sujith, who has been writing NEET exams since 2019, was not able to clear for the third time this year. Since he had secured low marks he could not get admission to pursue medicine.
Dejected over this, Sujith committed suicide by hanging, police said. His body was shifted to the Government hospital for post mortem.
Condoling the death, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss said this was the seventh incident of suicide this year due to NEET and expressed regret over the Central and State governments not taking steps to prevent such suicides.
Stating that getting exemption from NEET was the only solution to prevent such suicides, Dr Ramadoss, in a series of tweets said, the Governor was yet to give his assent for the Bill adopted in the State Assembly on the NEET issue.
‘This situation should not continue’, he said, adding, since the next academic year was scheduled to commence in the next few months, steps should be taken to exempt Tamilnadu from the purview of NEET.
‘For this the Governor should soon give his nod to the Bill and the State government should act fast to get the Presidential assent’, he added.
Dr Ramadoss also expressed anguish and grief over the suicide of Sujith and offered his condolences to the bereaved family members.
