Chennai: The Greater Chennai Police has said ‘no vehicles, except those on essential services, will be allowed to ply on the roads in Chennai, after midnight on 31 December, till 5 am on 1 January 2022’. This is in view of rising Covid-19 cases and Omicron variant threat.
Also, the DGP has said that no celebrations will be allowed in beaches and in public places. Further, police have advised citizens against drink and drive, warning them of arrests and seizure of vehicles.
‘There is no permission for celebrations on the eve of the new year on beaches across Tamilnadu. People are urged to celebrate in their houses without causing inconvenience to others,’ the DGP said in a press statement.
Vehicle checks would be further intensified on the eve of the New Year, he added. Action would be taken against those involved in inappropriate behavior, motorcycle racing and against those disturbing peace.
Besides, all hotels will have to continue following the present SOP and will have to end the operation by 11 pm. Restrictions also apply to private parties as part of New Year celebrations.
