Chennai: In a tragic incident, a 11-year-old boy was critically injured, when a stray bullet allegedly fired by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel during a shooting practise session hit him on the head at Ammachathiram village near Narthamalai in Pudukkottai district on Thursday.

A team of doctors successfully removed the bullet from head of the boy after a complicated surgery that lasted more than four hours at the Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital.

Sources said the boy was on life support in the intensive care unit. His condition remains to be critical and the medical team treating him was monitoring his vital parameters.

Meanwhile, the Pudukottai district police have registered a FIR under two sections of the IPC against the shooting range authorities in connection with the incident.

Pudukottai Superintendent of Police Nisha Parthiban declined to confirm when asked whether the bullet fired by the CISF personnel during the firing training session had hit the boy. Investigation is underway, she said.

Keeranur Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sivasubramanian held an inquiry with the CISF officials.

Meanwhile, PMK Youth Wing leader and Rajya Sabha MP Dr Anbumani Ramadoss demanded closure of the shooting range and urged the Tamil Naadu government to provide a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the boy’s parents.

In a series of tweets, he condemned the alleged negligent attitude of the CISF personnel and said world class treatment should be given to the boy who was battling for life at the Thanjavur hospital.

While demanding a thorough probe into the incident, Dr Anbumani claimed that ten years back a similar incident took place and sought to know how permission was granted for training in the shooting range. He also said that the shooting range should be shut immediately.
