Chennai: The kumbabhishekam (consecration) of the famous Vadapalani LordĀ Murugan temple in the city was performed on Sunday after a gap of 14 years.
However, devotees were not allowed in view of the Covid restrictions andĀ had to watch the proceedings on the templeās YouTube channel.
Also, the kumbabhishekams of 50 other temples administered by the HinduĀ Religious and Charitable Endowments Department was performed across the State on Sunday, sans devotees, who are disappointed over this.
‘While we understand that the government has implemented such restrictions as part to Covid control measures, rules should be equal to all. I saw a video today which claimed people taking part in a Church event at Royapuram in large numbers. Is this fair?,’ asked Sivakumar of Vadapalani.
Another devotee said, ‘the government is allowing TASMAC shops, bars and cinema theatres to function. In fact, these places are more dangerous for Covid spread when compared to temples. Devotees should be allowed to temples during consecrations and weekends with appropriate Covid protocols.’
Meanwhile, a police official said restrictions are common for all places of worship, irrespective of religions. ‘We have to check the video to verify its claims. If the charges are true, necessary action will be initiated,’ he added.
