Chennai: Starting today, Southern Railway has restored suburban train services in Chennai to pre-Covid level in all sections following relaxations announced by the State government due to reduction in Covid cases.
‘Due to relaxations in Covid protocol announced, the EMU timings for weekdays services are revised and restored to Pre-Covid services in all sections with effect from Feb 14,’ the Railway said in an announcement.
A total of 658 services will be operated in the Chennai suburban train section from today. About 254 services and 240 services would be operated in the Chennai-Arakkonam and Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu sections, respectively.
About 84 and 80 services would be operated on Chennai-Gummudipundi and Chennai Beach-Velachery sections.
Meanwhile, commuters recently urged SR to increase train frequency on Sundays. As Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted, more people have started to travel for shopping and social visits on Sundays. However, suburban train services are not able to cater to such a large group of commuters because fewer services are being operated when compared to weekdays.
