Bengaluru: Pre-university and degree colleges in Karnataka reopened today. However, spats between students and college authorities were reported from several areas after they girls were asked to remove their hijabs and sit in the classroom.
Several students wearing hijabs in colleges across Karnataka staged fresh protest today as they were denied entry citing High Court’s interim order.
Meanwhile, Section 144 has been imposed in Bagalkot, Bangalore, Chikkaballapura, Gadag, Shimoga, Tumkur, Mysore, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada. Meanwhile, Karnataka Home Minister maintained that ‘overall situation was peaceful’.
Dramatic visuals from a college show some students who had entered the classroom in hijabs and burkhas arguing with the teacher and the Principal of the school requesting them to follow the court order.
‘We are in accordance with the High Court’s order that says no religious garment, whether hijab or saffron shawls, will be allowed inside educational institutions,’ the Principal can be heard saying.
Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra today said that overall situation is peaceful across the State. ‘Few incidents reported (on alleged denial of entry for girl students into schools with their headscarves and Burqa). We’ve to follow interim order passed by HC. If anyone violates the order action will be taken as per law,’ he told ANI.
