Newly elected urban local body members take oath


Newly elected Councillors of Greater Chennai Corporation took charge at Ripon Buildings today.

Chennai: The newly-elected members in the urban local bodies election took oath today across Tamilnadu following which indirect election for top posts will be held on 4 March.

The swearing-in ceremony of 200 newly-elected Greater Chennai Corporation Councillors held at the grand old civic body’s headquarters Ripon building.

This is the first time since 2016 that the councillors of the GCC have convened together. GCC Commissioner Gangandeep Singh Bedi was present at the swearing-in ceremony.

On 4 March, the Corporation will hold the election for the council to elect Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Sources said the Mayor election would be in the forenoon and Deputy Mayor election in the afternoon.

If there was more than one nomination, the returning officer would conduct election. Otherwise, he would declare the lone contestant the winner, having been elected unopposed.

In Corporation, councillors will elect both Mayor and Deputy Mayor, while in Municipalities and Town Panchayats, members will elect Chairman and Vice-Chairman respectively.
