Jayakumar walks out of jail to warm reception

Chennai: A day after the Madras High Court granted conditional bail to former Minister D Jayakumar in an alleged land grabbing case, the senior AIADMK leader walked out of jail today morning.

Scores of supporters who gathered in front of the prison accorded him a warm welcome. They said Jayakumar has been framed in false case and he would prove his innocence in the court.

Granting bail on a petition filed by the former Minister, Justice A D Jagadish Chandira directed him to stay in Tiruchi for two weeks and sign before the Cantonment Police Station thrice a week–on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

He was also directed to appear before the Central Crime Branch in Chennai every Monday, until further orders.

In his application, Jayakumar alleged the Central Crime Branch of the Greater Chennai Police ‘falsely implicated’ him in the case due to political vendetta by using Mageshkumar, brother of his son-in-law, Naveenkumar over a Rs five crore property.

With this Jayakumar had been granted bail in all thre three cases filed against him. This included an attempt to murder case for forcing a DMK cadre to remove his shirt and parading him on public during the urban local body polls on 19 February. The second case was booked on charges of attempting to spread Covid pandemic when he staged a road roko agitation on the polling day.
