Chennai: A 19-year-old Dalit student of physiotherapy in Nagapattinam district killed herself at her home allegedly after being depressed due to harassment over non-payment of college fees. Following her death, students staged a protest in front of the college.
The girl’s relatives and friends also blocked the road outside the Nagapattinam government hospital, stating that they will not accept the body unless the correspondent, principal, and physiotherapy lecturer are arrested.
According to reports, a teacher in her college had allegedly made hurtful and casteist comments against students over not paying the fees on due time.
The victim was the younger of two daughters of Subramani and Chithra who are labourers. She was a first-year student of the college at Pappakoil. Police said it was Chithra who saw her daughter hanging from the ceiling at their house.
