New Delhi: A meeting to discuss the Covid situation in the country has been convened at 12 pm on Wednesday, 27 April via video conferencing. The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It is expected Chief Ministers of all States and Union Territories would be asked to attend.

The meeting is also likely to have senior officials of the Prime Minister’s Office, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and officials from their respective Ministries.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan will make a presentation on rising Covid cases during the meeting. He will also talk about the extent of vaccination, especially the booster drive and the trajectory of cases in certain states.

It may be recalled that in the past, Modi has held several meetings with the CMs, and even District Collectors, to understand the situation on the ground.

Experts believe that the fresh Covid-19 surge in Delhi is being driven by Omicron sub-lineage BA.2.12. The variant has been detected in a majority of samples sent for genome sequencing from the city, reports said.

India’s daily Covid-19 tally has been surging for the past two weeks, stoking fears of a fourth wave of the pandemic. On Sunday, the country reported 2,593 new cases. This is the second consecutive day that daily infections were above the 2,500-mark.
