Chennai : Stalled nearly a decade back, the Chennai Port-Maduravoyal double decker elevated road project was revived with the Tamilnadu government signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the stakeholders.
The MoU was in the presence of Chief Minister MK Stalin and Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways VK Singh on Monday to construct 20.565 km double decker elevated corridor at a cost of Rs 5,855 crore at the State Secretariat, giving a fresh lease of life for the project which is vital to the commercial development of Chennai.
The MoU was signed by the State government, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Chennai Port Trust and the Indian Navy.
An official release said due to the continuous effort of the state government to revive the stalled project, the MoU was signed among the stakeholders, in line with the announcement made in this regard in the Tamilnadu Budget 2022-23 on 18 March.
“In the double decker elevated corridor, the stretch between Port and Koyambedu will have 13 entries and exits from the first level for the benefit of local traffic. On the second level (top level), heavy vehicles heading for Chennai Port would alone be allowed to travel to and from the Port to Maduravoyal, ” the release said.
Presenting the Budget in the State Assembly,Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan said a 20.6 km long double-decker elevated corridor at an estimated cost of more than 5,700 crore will be constructed.
A detailed project report is under preparation by the NHAI, he had said. Â
