The nation-wide protests against Agnipath scheme reached Chennai. Hundreds of youngsters from various districts tried to gather near Secretariat this morning and raised slogans against the Central government.
With such protests turning violent in other parts of the country, the police chose to play it safe and detained protestors. They were taken to Rajarathinam Stadium stadium in Egmore.
The Union Cabinet recently aproved a recruitment scheme called Agnipath for Indian youth to serve in the Armed Forces. The scheme allows youth to serve in the Armed Forces for a period of four years. The youth joining the armed forces under Agnipath scheme will be known as Agniveers.
At various parts of the country including Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra many took to street protesting against the scheme. A train was torched in Bihar and stones were hurled at many places.
