Stephen Vaughan appointed as new CEO at Yorkshire

Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) on Wednesday announced the appointment of Stephen Vaughan as their new chief executive, while former England fast bowler Darren Gough will stay as the managing director of cricket on a permanent basis.Vaughan’s role will officially begin on November 7, almost exactly a year on from the resignation of his predecessor, Mark Arthur, who stood down at the height of the club’s racism scandal, prior to Azeem Rafiq’s explosive testimony at the DCMS parliamentary hearing at which he had also been due to give evidence.In his three-year stint at Wasps, Vaughan went from CEO of sports business in August 2019 to becoming Group Chief Executive in 2020, but in October he was one of 167 players, coaches and staff made redundant following the collapse of the parent company, Wasps Holdings Ltd.Prior to that, he had been managing director of Thomas Cook London 2012, where he led the company’s involvement with the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, and seven years at Gloucester Rugby.Stephen joins the YCCC following three years at Wasps Group — the premiership rugby club — , which he joined as CEO of sports businesses in August 2019. He became Group Chief Executive in 2020, with additional responsibility for venues, overseeing the securing of stadium naming rights and the return of Coventry City Football Club to the city.During his time at Wasps, Vaughan was responsible for the rollout of a comprehensive Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) strategy, a trait that made him attractive to Yorkshire as they seek to rebuild the club’s reputation following a damaging two years.”Yorkshire County Cricket Club is one of the most iconic sporting institutions in the world and it’s truly an honour to take up this position. Working alongside the newly installed Board I am determined to deliver sporting success at Headingley and produce exceptional results, underpinned by robust commercial foundations and our vision to make Yorkshire Cricket a place for everyone,” he added.Stephen brings decades of experience in professional sport, having represented Walsall FC as a player, prior to roles as Managing Director of Thomas Cook London 2012 where he led the company’s involvement with the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in London, and seven successful years at Gloucester Rugby.
