The gunman who opened fire at Imran Khan during a political march in Punjab province said he tried to assassinate the former Pakistan prime minister because he was misleading the public and could not tolerate it. Khan was injured when the gunman attacked the container-mounted truck carrying him during his protest march, in what his party claimed was a clear assassination attempt. The gunman also admitted that he has was not affiliated with any political, religious, or terror outfits.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the shooting at Imran Khan’s convoy and said that violence should have no place in the country’s politics. Federal government will extend all support necessary to Punjab govt for security & investigation. Violence should have no place in our country’s politics, Sharif said. Since being ousted in April through a parliamentary vote, Imran Khan has held rallies across Pakistan, stirring opposition against the Sharif-led government.

Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leaders said that former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan believes that the attack on him in which bullets were fired was carried out at the behest of three people including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, country`s Interior Minister and a top ISI general and his remarks were based on information he had received. He believes there are three people on whose behest this was done- Shehbaz Sharif, Rana Sanaullah and Maj Gen Faisal.
