Another feather in Apollo’s hat

Chennai: Apollo Cancer Centre, successfully performed a rare surgery to treat recurrent retroperitoneal sarcoma and removed 44 cm sized tumour, weighing 8.4kg. A press release said that the patient was a 54-year-old woman from Bangladesh with complaints of abdomen distension for 6 months and reduced appetite and abdomen discomfort after food intake. The team was led by Ajit Pai, Consultant- GI Surgical Oncology & Robotic Surgeon, Apollo Cancer Centre Chennai. Ajit Pai said,”Retroperitoneal sarcomas are rare tumours accounting for only 1 – 2% of all solid malignancies. Of all sarcomas, the majority occur outside of the retroperitoneum. This case was extremely rare and challenging in terms of a recurrent disease close to major vessels and involving the large intestine and small intestine requiring multivisceral resection and achieving a margin free excision. The treatment plan worked very well for the patient. I am extremely delighted that our efforts to treat this rare disease of recurrent retroperitoneal sarcoma was successful. The right choice of treatment and advanced surgical techniques in combination with clinical expertise tremendously improved the chances of successful treatment of a rare and complicated case of tumour.” Preetha Reddy, executive vice chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited said,” I extend my hearty congratulations to the medical team and appreciate the cancer warrior for being courageous enough to go through such a complicated surgery.
