The Southern Railway is embarking on a transformative journey to enhance train speeds on critical routes within Tamil Nadu. With a series of strategic measures, including the construction of additional tracks, track quality improvements, modern signaling systems, and strengthening of bridges, the railway network is set to deliver faster and more efficient train services.
Express trains have already experienced significant speed enhancements on key routes, marking a notable milestone with speeds of up to 130 kmph. These impressive speeds have been achieved on critical routes such as Chennai Central-Kootur, Chennai Central-Arakkonam, Jolarpettai, and Chennai Central-Renikunda, covering a substantial distance of 413 kilometers. These enhancements are not only about speed but also about providing passengers with enhanced travel experiences.
As part of this initiative, long-distance railway lines spanning 1,218 kilometers have undergone essential upgrades, extending by an additional 110 kilometers to facilitate faster travel for express trains. This expansion of the railway network is a significant step towards improving connectivity within Tamil Nadu and beyond.
The Southern Railway has focused on upgrading the quality of tracks to ensure smoother and safer journeys. The modernization of tracks not only contributes to speed improvements but also enhances passenger safety and comfort.
The installation of modern signaling systems is another crucial aspect of this endeavor. These systems play a pivotal role in managing train traffic, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trains on the network.
In the Southern Railway zone alone, a remarkable 1,394 kilometers of railway lines have been upgraded, with plans in place to continue increasing train speeds. These improvements align with the railway’s commitment to providing passengers with faster and more convenient travel options.
