In a recent incident at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, a section of spectators heckled the players of the Pakistan cricket team during their match with the Indian team. The incident, which unfolded during the much-anticipated India vs Pakistan World Cup match, raised concerns about the use of sports as a platform for fostering unity rather than promoting hatred.Udhayanidhi Stalin, the State Sports Minister and DMK youth wing secretary, was quick to condemn the actions of the hecklers. He emphasised that sports should serve as a tool to unify and foster true brotherhood between nations, rather than being used as a means to spread hatred. Udhayanidhi’s response came in the form of a social media post, which gained widespread attention and support.
The distasteful episode captured on video showed a section of spectators targeting Pakistan’s wicket-keeper-batsman, Mohammad Rizwan, by chanting Jai Sri Ram as he made his way back to the pavilion after being dismissed by Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah. India ultimately won the match by seven wickets with a comfortable 117 balls remaining, but the victory was overshadowed by the unsportsmanlike conduct of some fans.
