All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary, Edappadi K Palaniswami, announced the party’s decision to sever its ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is giving jitters to DMK government, during a public meeting held to commemorate the AIADMK’s founding day. Palaniswami attributed the decision to the AIADMK’s desire for an independent political path, free from any alliances. He emphasised that the party would no longer consider aligning with the BJP in future elections, including the crucial 2026 Assembly election. The AIADMK’s alliance with the BJP had been a topic of contention, with the DMK government under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin often accusing the AIADMK of being subservient to the BJP’s interests. The rift between the two parties had been a significant factor in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, with the DMK government alleging rampant corruption within the AIADMK and pointing to its ties with the BJP as a means of exploiting the state.
