In a move aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing the alarming number of accidents caused by overspeeding, the Greater Chennai City Police have announced revised speed limits for different categories of vehicles. Effective this Saturday, motorists on city roads will need to adhere to these new speed restrictions, with the penalty for violations ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000.The decision to implement these maximum speed limits comes in response to troubling statistics released by the Union Road Transport Ministry. The data reveals that nearly 9 out of 10 accidents in Tamil Nadu are a direct result of overspeeding. With this in mind, the authorities hope that not only the fear of injury or even death but also the prospect of financial penalties will encourage motorists to adopt safer driving habits.
According to the official notification, the maximum speed for light motor vehicles, such as cars, is set at 60 kilometers per hour (kmph). Two-wheelers are permitted to reach speeds of up to 50 kmph, while heavy motor vehicles must adhere to a maximum speed of 50 kmph. Auto-rickshaws have a more conservative speed limit of 40 kmph.
