Stalin seeks release of Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Maldivian officials

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and sought the release of 12 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Maldivian Coast Guard on October 22. The DMK leader also said that the fishermen’s boat was detained for allegedly entering the maritime zone of Maldives, while they were pursuing their “legitimate fishing activities” on the high seas. Drawing attention to the fine of MVR 42,00,000, approximately Rs 2.25 crore, imposed on the fishing vessel operator, Stalin wrote, “The authorities in Maldives have informed that the penalty amount must be settled within 30 days from the receipt of the notice and the vessel will be detained by the Maldives Police Force until the fine is paid.” The fine was imposed on November 1, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister said. “I request your urgent intervention on behalf of these fishermen and seek waiver of the penalty imposed on the vessel,” the letter further read. MK Stalin also emphasised that the fishermen’s families depend on them for their livelihoods. “The exorbitant fine imposed on them is well beyond their means. It threatens to permanently impoverish them and their families,” claimed MK Stalin. “I also request you to secure the prompt release of the fishermen along with their fishing vessel. I believe that your timely intervention can bring relief to these fishermen and their families, who are currently facing an extremely difficult situation”, stated CM MK Stalin.
