Eye verification equipment to be set up in all ration shops

In the evolving landscape of Point of Sales (PoS) systems, Tamil Nadu’s ration shops are gearing up for a significant technological leap. Presently, the use of PoS equipment involves the registration of citizens’ fingerprints for verification before the distribution of essential items. However, a recent shift in strategy aims to enhance efficiency and alleviate the challenges faced by buying citizens. The initial contract with a private agency, responsible for the integrated computerization since 2016, concluded in 2021 but was extended for an additional two years. Despite this extension, the inordinate delay in obtaining approval for fingerprint verification has resulted in hardships for the citizens relying on these ration shops.

To address these challenges, authorities have taken a proactive step by initiating the second phase of computerization. In this phase, the focus shifts from fingerprints to pupil (eye) verification, offering a more seamless and timely authentication process. The contract for implementing this advanced technology has been entrusted once again to the same private agency, which showcases confidence in their expertise.Commencing in January 2024, the task at hand involves setting up state-of-the-art pupil-checking equipment in ration shops across Tamil Nadu. This phased implementation is designed to ensure a gradual progression, minimizing disruption to the regular operations of these essential service points. The move towards pupil verification marks a forward-looking approach, leveraging cutting-edge technology to streamline the citizen experience at ration shops.
