Prosecutors Should Treat Police Officials With Dignity

The State Public Prosecutor of Tamil Nadu, Hasan Mohammed Jinnah, has issued instructions to all prosecutors across the state, emphasizing the importance of treating police personnel with dignity, regardless of their rank. The directive comes as a response to reports of mistreatment and disrespect faced by police personnel visiting prosecutor offices. In a communication addressed to all additional prosecutors and government advocates, Hasan Mohammed Jinnah urged his colleagues to provide proper seating arrangements for police personnel during their visits. The directive explicitly states that irrespective of their rank, all police personnel must be treated in a humane manner, reflecting a commitment to fostering a respectful working relationship between legal and law enforcement professionals. The directive also highlights the responsibility of prosecutors to assist police personnel by providing necessary information related to cases. If, for any reason, police personnel fail to offer sufficient details, prosecutors are instructed to approach the respective senior officers rather than reprimanding the individuals directly. Recognizing the significant workload faced by police personnel, the State Public Prosecutor expressed his concern over instances where mistreatment and disrespect were reported within some prosecutor offices. He emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable and called for a collaborative approach to ensure a harmonious working environment. Importantly, the directive underscores that even if prosecutors identify discrepancies in police investigations, they should refrain from reprimanding the personnel involved. Instead, any concerns or issues should be brought to the attention of the higher officers concerned, fostering a system of constructive feedback and communication.
