In response to the unprecedented heavy rainfall in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, efforts are underway to address the challenges posed by the deluge. Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena highlighted the magnitude of the situation, stating, ‘Heavy rain is affecting the daily lives of people in southern districts, and we are seeking the assistance of government agencies.’Thirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts are witnessing an extraordinary influx of rain, leading to waterlogging and potential hazards. The downpour has prompted a halt in regular activities, with concerns about transportation, safety, and infrastructure resilience.
Shiv Daa Meena, announced relief measures, including the declaration of a holiday for schools and colleges in Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Tenkasi districts on Monday.
In areas heavily affected by flooding, helicopters have been deployed to provide food assistance. Specially organised teams are distributing essential supplies to stranded residents, particularly in waterlogged regions of Thirunelveli and Thoothukudi, he added.
In response to rising water levels, evacuations are underway in vulnerable areas. Residents in low-lying regions are being moved to safer locations to prevent casualties and ensure their well-being, the Chief Secretary added.
Waterlogging has been reported in key areas, including Kovilpatti and Nagercoil, affecting railway subways and streets.
