Protest against RN Ravi: Case against 178 people


Chennai, Jan 12: A case has been registered by Karuppur police station in this district against 178 people for showing black flags against Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi during his visit to Periyar University on Thursday.

The case was filed based on a complaint by VAO Mohan of Karuppur against caders of various political outfits including DMK, CPM, National Students’ Union of India, Members of Tamil Nadu Students Federation and others for staging black flag protests against the Governor and on charges of illegal gathering, causing law and order issues.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, who arrived in Salem yesterday by air from Chennai, participated in a meeting with Jagannathan, the Vice-Chancellor of Periyar University. Notably, he was recently arrested on corruption charges and later released on bail.

Governor RN Ravi held a meeting with the accused Vice-Chancellor in the university and lasted for 30 minutes. It is said that Governor Ravi sought an explanation from Vice-Chancellor Jagannathan about the complaint of misconduct against the Vice-Chancellor, the arrest process, the police raid conducted in the university, etc.

The governor who usually visits Universities during convocation ceremonies, and national-level and state-level programs, had visited Periyar University, without any program, but meeting the accused Vice Chancellor, has triggered a controversy.

Opposing Governor who holds the high constitutional post, held a meeting with the accused Vice-Chancellor of Periyar University, the cadres representing various political outfits staged a black flag protest.
