Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) marked a robust ridership in January 2024, welcoming a total of 84,63,384 passengers. The metro system’s peak footfall for the month occurred on January 12, 2024, with an impressive 3,64,521 commuters, as highlighted in a recent press release from CMRL.

Passenger preferences for travel varied, showcasing the diverse modes available within the metro system. Among the commuters, 37,92,912 individuals opted for the convenience of travel cards, while 2,21,716 embraced online QR code transactions. Additionally, 2,09,136 passengers utilized static QR codes, and 25,36,178 relied on traditional paper QR codes. The digital landscape saw substantial engagement, with 3,75,357 people choosing Paytm, 3,04,232 utilizing WhatsApp, and 97,266 leveraging PhonePe services.

To further enhance the passenger experience and encourage ridership, CMRL introduced attractive offers, including a 20% discount on all ticket purchases. This discount is applicable across various ticketing options, such as Metro Travel Cards, mobile QR code tickets for single, return, and group journeys, as well as QR trip passes accessible through popular platforms like WhatsApp and PhonePe.

In a move to streamline ticket booking processes and embrace digital convenience, CMRL introduced the CMRL Whatsapp Ticketing System, accessible at +91 83000 86000. This initiative aligns with the growing trend of leveraging messaging platforms for seamless transactions. Additionally, passengers can continue to conveniently book tickets through the popular Paytm platform.
