Chennai, Feb 8: PMK President Anbumani Ramadoss has urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide free bus travel for men, similar to the existing provision for women, as a measure to increase the utilization of public transportation services. His call for free bus travel for men came during his participation in a Climate Justice and Gender Equality event organized by Pasumai Thayagam at a city college on Wednesday.Addressing reporters, Anbumani highlighted the adverse effects of climate change on agriculture, leading to increased rice prices and other challenges. He emphasized the importance of expanding public transportation infrastructure to mitigate pollution levels in Chennai and beyond. Currently, Chennai has only 3,500 buses, a number that Anbumani believes should be increased to 8,000 to meet the growing demand for transportation services.
Anbumani stressed the urgency of addressing pollution-related issues, citing the alarming statistic of approximately 4,000 deaths in Chennai each year attributed to pollution. He underscored the need for proactive measures to combat climate change and protect the environment.
Speaking to students at the event, Anbumani called upon them to raise awareness about climate change and advocate for legislation aimed at addressing environmental challenges. He expressed concern over the recurring flooding in Chennai and warned of the impending risks posed by climate change, including rising sea levels that could impact coastal areas like Stella Maris College in the coming decades.
Anbumani emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing climate change, urging students to take proactive measures to mitigate its impact. He warned of the growing threat of severe droughts and high-intensity cyclones, urging vigilance and preparedness in the face of these challenges.
