A significant milestone has been achieved in the ongoing Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project as construction commences on the tallest pillar at Kathipara Junction, soaring to an impressive height of 108 feet. This towering structure, a vital component of corridor 5 within the expansive 116-kilometer Phase II network, presents a unique engineering challenge due to its location amidst heavy traffic flow and the convergence of two metro rail corridors from Phase I.
Leading the construction efforts is Larsen and Toubro (L&T), employing the renowned “Balanced Cantilever” method known for its efficacy in scenarios with limited ground space and high traffic volume. T. Archunan, Director (Projects) at Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), lauded the method’s successful application in Phase I and its suitability for erecting pillars of significant height. The Kathipara Junction pillar, surpassing 30 meters in height, is poised to become the tallest structure within the Chennai Metro Rail network.
Krishna Prabhakar K., Project Manager of L&T, underscored the meticulous planning involved in executing the sharpest curve (125-meter radius) between Butt Road and Alandur. The foundation, boasting a diameter of 1.5 meters and supported by 12 piles, has been engineered to withstand substantial loads, ensuring the safety of commuters and pedestrians alike.
