CMRL’s Phase II to drive transit-oriented development

Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) is gearing up to transform transit infrastructure in the city with its ambitious Phase II project. With a strategic focus on transit-oriented development (TOD), CMRL plans to integrate commercial spaces around major stations, enhancing connectivity, convenience, and urban development.
The Phase II project, spanning 116 km across three corridors, marks a significant expansion of Chennai’s metro network. Identified areas near key interchange stations such as Koyambedu, Alandur, Sholinganallur, and Madhavaram Milk Colony are earmarked for the construction of malls, office spaces, and plazas. These developments will be seamlessly connected to the metro stations via dedicated skywalks, facilitating easy access for commuters.
The decision to incorporate commercial spaces around metro stations aims to not only boost revenue but also increase ridership by offering commuters a range of amenities and services in close proximity to transit hubs. By creating vibrant mixed-use spaces, CMRL seeks to transform metro stations into bustling centers of activity, catering to the diverse needs of residents and visitors alike.
To ensure the effective utilization of identified land parcels and maximize the potential of TOD, CMRL officials are set to engage consultants. These consultants will provide recommendations for the development of detailed feasibility reports and master plans for each location. The scope of work includes considering commuter perspectives, analyzing traffic flow, and incorporating global best practices in TOD.
Among the identified areas, Koyambedu emerges as a focal point for significant development, covering 31 acres around the metro station. Consultants will play a crucial role in devising innovative solutions to seamlessly integrate commercial and transit infrastructure, fostering a dynamic urban environment.
