Corporation responds to report on Smart Bikes’ poor condition

Following a critical report that highlighted the poor state of the city’s smart bikes, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has taken immediate measures to address the issue. GCC officials have confirmed the retrieval and reinstallation of bicycles at various cycling hubs, notably at Nungambakkam, Kilpauk, and Nehru Park metro stations.

An authoritative source from the GCC revealed that instructions were swiftly issued to the bike handlers to collect the malfunctioning cycles for necessary maintenance. This action follows the GCC’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility and environmental sustainability through the Smart City Mission initiative, launched in 2019.

The smart bike initiative was designed to reduce pollution and alleviate traffic congestion across the city. The operation of these bicycles was outsourced to an external contractor, who is now under scrutiny to ensure that the bikes are kept in optimal condition.

The GCC’s prompt response aims to restore confidence in the smart bike system and underscores the corporation’s dedication to providing reliable and sustainable transportation options for Chennai’s residents. The maintenance and reinstallation efforts are expected to improve the availability and functionality of the smart bikes, ensuring they serve their intended purpose effectively.
