In an effort to enhance road safety and accommodate new bus routes, the Greater Chennai Corporation is actively installing new speed breakers and removing improperly marked or unnecessary ones. This initiative follows a special drive launched last month to address unmarked speed breakers within city limits.

The corporation’s actions are partly driven by ongoing projects from the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and the metro water department, necessitating adjustments to speed breakers in certain areas. Additionally, changes in bus routes have led to the need for new speed breakers on interior roads.

Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation have emphasized their commitment to regular maintenance and proper marking of existing speed breakers. “We are continuously removing irregular speed breakers while ensuring that existing ones are properly marked and maintained,” an official stated.

The initiative is being carried out under the guidance of a committee formed by the Chennai City Traffic Police, chaired by the Joint Commissioner (South). This committee now oversees the laying of new speed breakers, requiring clearance before installation.

  • In response to public complaints, the corporation is addressing maintenance issues with speed breakers. The installation of new speed breakers is now contingent upon obtaining a no objection certificate (NOC) from the City Traffic Police, ensuring that all new installations adhere to standardized norms.
