In response to circulating rumors on social media suggesting an imminent electricity tariff hike, the Tamil Nadu government’s Fact Check Unit (FCU) stepped in on Tuesday to clarify and debunk the misinformation.
The rumors originated from a post by a BJP supporter, featuring a screenshot purportedly from a recent news report, hinting at an upcoming increase in electricity tariffs. The post quickly gained traction, prompting the FCU to investigate and address the issue.
Upon review, the FCU confirmed that the screenshot was from 2022, a year when the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) did authorize a tariff increase. This decision was made to address a significant debt exceeding Rs 1.6 lakh crore, allowing for annual revisions over the subsequent five years.
Despite this historical context, the FCU assured the public that there are no current plans for another electricity tariff hike. The clarification aims to quell any undue concerns among residents and ensure accurate information is disseminated.
