₹78.67 cr Delta Kuruvai Cultivation Special Package announced

The Tamil Nadu government unveiled the Delta Kuruvai Cultivation Special Package scheme for 2024, allocating ₹78.67 crore to support farmers in the Cauvery delta districts during the kuruvai paddy cultivation season. This initiative, announced by Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare M.R.K. Panneerselvam, aims to alleviate the impact of delayed water release and insufficient monsoon rains, which have affected the timely cultivation in the region.

The customary water release from the Mettur Dam on June 12 was hindered this year due to unexpected circumstances, including a delay in the onset of the monsoon and insufficient water levels in the dam. In response, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin directed the implementation of this special package to support the affected farmers.

Key components of the package include the distribution of approximately 2,000 metric tons of paddy seeds for cultivation across about one lakh acres. These seeds will be made available through Agricultural Extension Centres at a 50% subsidized rate. Additionally, ₹40 crore has been allocated to subsidize the mechanized cultivation of paddy, encouraging the use of advanced farming techniques.

Farmers will also receive essential inputs such as micronutrients, bio-fertilizers, zinc sulphate, and gypsum at half the usual cost. The provision of high-quality seeds at subsidized rates is a central feature of the package, ensuring that farmers have access to the best resources for their crops.

Moreover, the package includes subsidies for various farming equipment and drones, promoting the adoption of modern agricultural practices. This comprehensive support aims to enhance productivity and sustainability in the region’s paddy cultivation.

The Delta Kuruvai Cultivation Special Package is a timely intervention designed to mitigate the challenges faced by farmers due to environmental and climatic unpredictability. By providing substantial financial and material support, the Tamil Nadu government reaffirms its commitment to the welfare of its farmers and the agricultural prosperity of the Cauvery delta region.
