In a strong condemnation of the Centre’s decision to postpone the NEET exam for postgraduate admissions, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has urged the state government to permanently ban the medical entrance test due to the recent issues surrounding its conduct.
In a statement released on Sunday, Anbumani Ramadoss recalled that the NEET-PG exam was originally scheduled for that day but was abruptly cancelled at the eleventh hour. He criticized the decision, highlighting the significant mental distress caused to students. “It is condemnable that the decision has been taken without considering the mental welfare of the students,” Ramadoss stated.
The health ministry cited the need to ensure the exam procedures were fool-proof as the reason for the cancellation. Despite acknowledging the good intentions behind the Centre’s decision, the PMK leader pointed out the severe inconvenience faced by students. “Students have faced inexplicable difficulties. The centres for the NEET-PG exam were allocated several kilometres away from the students’ residences, with some being placed in other states. Many students had already reached the cities where their centres were located two days ago,” he explained. “Due to the last-minute cancellation, they are depressed. The information about the cancellation should have been given at least three days earlier,” he added.
Anbumani also noted that there have been consistent complaints about flaws in the conduct of the exam over the past seven years, yet these issues have not been rectified. “So, the government should ban NEET exams permanently to avoid all the issues,” he urged.
