Private bus operators introduce shuttle services in Chennai

With the imminent deadline prohibiting the entry of private buses into Chennai, operators have introduced shuttle van services to ensure continued connectivity for passengers. The new shuttle services will operate from key pickup points across the city, including Vadapalani, Velachery, Pallavaram, and Sholinganallur, transporting passengers to and from the new bus terminus at Kilambakkam in south Chennai.
Located about 30 kilometers from the city, the Kilambakkam bus terminus is set to become a major transportation hub. The introduction of shuttle vans aims to enhance last-mile connectivity, ensuring that passengers can easily reach the terminus without inconvenience.
Once the parking lot at the new terminus is completed, all omni buses will be barred from entering Chennai’s roads. This measure is expected to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow within the city.
A private bus operator highlighted the need for such a service, noting that patronage for omni buses has declined following the end of summer vacations and the absence of festivals. He emphasized the importance of remaining competitive, stating, “To stay in the competition with other transport services, it is necessary for private bus operators to offer added convenience. These shuttle van services, with an additional charge for pick-ups from key points in Chennai, will help us achieve that.”
The initiative has been well-received by regular passengers, who appreciate the added convenience and the effort to maintain seamless transportation options despite the new restrictions. The shuttle vans are expected to provide a reliable solution for commuters, ensuring they can still access long-distance bus services without significant disruption.
