Vasan, Annamalai condemn MP for Sengol remarks

TMC(M) president G.K. Vasan and BJP State president K. Annamalai have criticized Samajwadi Party MP R.K. Chaudhary for his remarks on Sengol, the golden sceptre presented by the Thiruvavaduthurai Math and installed in the Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Chaudhary had described Sengol as a symbol of “monarchy” and called for its removal from Parliament to “save the Constitution.”
G.K. Vasan emphasized the historical and cultural importance of Sengol in Tamil Nadu. He highlighted that in the Tamil landscape, Sengol symbolizes just and fair governance by kings since the Sangam era. Vasan defended the sceptre’s presence in Parliament, asserting its significance in representing righteous leadership.
K. Annamalai also condemned Chaudhary’s remarks, stressing the symbolic value of Sengol. “We wish to educate the ill-informed MP that Sengol is a symbol of righteousness, which was banished by Pandit Nehru and restored to its rightful place today by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Annamalai stated. He praised Modi for reinstating the sceptre, suggesting that its presence in Parliament symbolizes a return to ethical governance.
Sengol, a golden sceptre, was presented by the Thiruvavaduthurai Math in Tamil Nadu and has a storied history in the region. It is seen as a symbol of righteous rule and has been revered since the Sangam era. Its installation in the Lok Sabha by Prime Minister Modi was intended to honor this cultural heritage.
R.K. Chaudhary’s comments sparked controversy as he labeled Sengol a symbol of monarchy and argued for its removal from Parliament. He suggested that its presence was incompatible with the democratic values enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
