Chennai’s second airport at Parandur to get site clearance in July

Chennai’s much-anticipated second airport at Parandur is on track to receive site clearance from the Centre this month, marking a significant milestone for the project.
The Tamil Nadu government has earmarked ₹32,704.92 crore for the Parandur airport in Kancheepuram district, designed to handle nearly 100 million passengers annually. This new facility aims to alleviate congestion at Chennai’s existing airport and cater to the region’s growing air traffic demands.
A senior government official stated, “We will get the site clearance in a month. Following this, we will obtain No Objection Certificates from various departments within the next six months. Details on land acquisition, including all survey numbers, will be posted by July-August.”
Site clearance represents the first major approval required by the State government to expedite the greenfield airport’s establishment. The project’s progress hinges on the clearance from a Steering Committee, which includes representatives from the Department of Civil Aviation, Home Ministry, Defence Ministry, Department of Economic Affairs, Airports Authority of India, and Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
“The Steering Committee may meet next week. If they approve the airport, it will be presented to the Minister of Civil Aviation. We are expecting the final approval to come through this month,” added another source.
