The Greater Chennai Police (GCP) detained a man identified as Gana Sridhar for allegedly threatening a group of YouTubers who were recording videos on Ritchie Street near Anna Salai on Saturday. The incident came to light after a video of the YouTubers being harassed went viral on social media.
According to a senior official of the GCP, even though no formal complaint had been lodged by the YouTubers, the Chintadripet police took immediate action upon noticing the widely circulated video. “We have taken cognisance of the incident based on the video being circulated on social media and have secured Gana Sridhar,” the official said.
The video showed a group of individuals on Ritchie Street being confronted and harassed by Sridhar, who threatened them while they were filming. The swift response from the police highlights their commitment to maintaining law and order and addressing threats to public safety.
The police have urged citizens to report such incidents promptly to ensure quick action and to deter similar occurrences in the future.
Ritchie Street, known for its bustling electronics market, attracts numerous visitors daily, including content creators and tech enthusiasts. The incident has sparked discussions about the safety of public spaces for creative professionals and the role of law enforcement in protecting citizens.
The authorities have reassured the public that steps will be taken to ensure such incidents do not recur and that those responsible for creating a hostile environment will be held accountable.
