HC quashes FIR against former DGP R Natraj

The Madras High Court has quashed the criminal complaint filed against former Director General of Police (DGP) and ex-MLA of AIADMK, R Natraj, concerning the forwarding of a malicious message against Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in a WhatsApp group. Justice G. Jayachandran presided over the case and directed R Natraj to submit an affidavit within 24 hours, affirming that he does not subscribe to or endorse the alleged malicious message against the Chief Minister. This directive was a condition for quashing the criminal complaint. In his defense, Natraj emphasized his high personal regard for Chief Minister Stalin and disowned any involvement in the offense of forwarding the malicious message. He argued that the prosecution failed to identify the original source of the message and falsely implicated him in the case. Natraj’s submission highlighted that he had no intention of endorsing or promoting any message against the Chief Minister. He contended that his respect for the Chief Minister remained intact and that the allegations against him were unfounded. The court’s decision to quash the criminal complaint brings relief to the former DGP, who has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. The ruling underscores the importance of establishing the original source of such messages before implicating individuals in criminal complaints. As directed by Justice Jayachandran, Natraj’s affidavit will be shared in the same WhatsApp group where the controversial message was initially forwarded, further clarifying his stance on the matter.
