Paris, July 30: India managed to salvage a 1-1 draw against the 2016 Olympic champions Argentina in the Group B men’s hockey competition, thanks to a last-minute drag-flick by captain Harmanpreet Singh at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium on Monday.

Harmanpreet’s powerful drag-flick deflected off an Argentine defender’s foot to beat the experienced goalkeeper Tomas Santiago, who had otherwise been impeccable in maintaining Argentina’s lead from Lucas Martinez’s 22nd-minute field goal. This 59th-minute equalizer provided a much-needed relief to the Indian team, who struggled to break through the staunch Argentine defense throughout the match.

Argentina rued a missed penalty stroke soon after half-time when Maico Casella Schuth’s shot went wide. Despite their robust defense, Argentina couldn’t withstand India’s desperate final onslaught, which included taking off their goalkeeper for an extra field player in the last three minutes. India’s relentless pressure eventually paid off with a goal from their ninth penalty corner.

This result leaves India with four points from two matches, following their narrow 3-2 win against New Zealand. They now face a relatively easier challenge against Ireland, who recently lost 1-2 to Tokyo Olympics silver medallists Australia.

For India to secure a top spot in their group and ensure a favorable draw in the quarterfinals, their forwards need to improve their goal-scoring accuracy. Argentina’s strategy of counter-attacking kept the Indian defense alert, but it was the Indian attack’s lack of cohesion and wayward shooting that truly defined the match.

Despite a strong start with Abhishek’s fifth-minute reverse drive hitting the crossbar, India couldn’t maintain their offensive momentum. The Argentine defense, led by Santiago, effectively nullified India’s attempts, with several of Harmanpreet’s penalty corners being padded away.

The Indian team’s inability to capitalize on their chances continued into the second half. Notably, Jarmanpreet Singh missed a clear opportunity right before half-time, and another promising attack early in the second half saw Indian forwards fail to convert a close-range opportunity.

With defending champions Belgium and Australia securing two straight wins each, India must enhance their performance against Ireland to stay competitive in the tournament. The late equalizer against Argentina highlights the Indian team’s resilience, but they will need more consistent execution to progress further.
