The Madras High Court has granted conditional anticipatory bail to BJP Secretary Aswathaman in a case where he was accused of making inflammatory remarks intended to incite conflict between two communities.
The incident in question occurred during a memorial event for Thangam Ammal, the wife of Thangam Muthukrishnan, the State Secretary of Shiv Sena, in Nagapattinam. Aswathaman, who attended the event, allegedly made statements that were perceived as inciting discord between two groups. Subsequently, the Nagore police registered a case against him.
Aswathaman sought anticipatory bail and filed a petition at the Madras High Court. The case was heard by Justice T.V. Thamilselvi. During the hearing, R.C. Balkankaraj appeared on behalf of the petitioner.
After considering the arguments from both sides, Justice Thamilselvi granted anticipatory bail to Aswathaman under specific conditions. The court ordered that Aswathaman must appear at the Nagore police station every Saturday and sign in, and he is also required to submit an affidavit promising that he will not engage in any hate speech in the future.
The court’s decision provides Aswathaman with temporary protection from arrest, contingent on his compliance with these conditions.
