In a bold move to enhance road safety, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) launched the ‘Zero is Good’ campaign on Tuesday, aiming to achieve zero accidents across the city on August 26. This ambitious initiative is part of a larger effort to tackle Chennai’s concerningly high accident rates, as the city often ranks among the top 10 in India for fatal accidents.The campaign was inaugurated at the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) central depot on Pallavan Salai. During the launch, R. Sudhakar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), acknowledged the difficulty of the task but expressed a cautious optimism. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in achieving this goal, citing the need to harness the city’s collective energy towards positive change. Sudhakar also noted that the GCTP would draw on expertise from IIT-Madras’s Centre of Excellence for Road Safety to help guide the campaign.
Alby John, Managing Director of MTC, highlighted recent safety improvements made by the corporation, including the retrofitting of buses with rear-view cameras and enhanced driver training programs. These measures are part of a broader strategy to improve safety on the roads and reduce the risk of accidents involving public transportation.
IIT-Madras Professor Venkatesh Balasubramaniam, a key supporter of the campaign, expressed his hope that Chennai could become a model for road safety in India. He emphasized the significance of the ‘Zero is Good’ campaign, not just as a one-day event but as a potential catalyst for long-term improvements in road safety across the country.
