Paris, Aug 12: Paris concluded its memorable hosting of the 2024 Summer Olympics with a grand, star-studded closing ceremony held at France’s national stadium. After two and a half weeks of extraordinary athletic performances and emotional moments, the city handed over the Olympic torch to Los Angeles, which will host the next Summer Games in 2028.
The closing ceremony was a celebration of Olympic themes, featuring a vibrant and artistic show that included dazzling golden fireworks and a festive atmosphere. Thousands of athletes joined in the revelry, creating a lively and spirited conclusion to Paris’ first Games in a century.
The highlight of the evening was a spectacular performance by Grammy-winning French pop-rock band Phoenix. Their set was momentarily interrupted by enthusiastic athletes who surged onto the stage during a highlight video from the Games. Despite attempts by stadium announcements in French and English to direct them back to their seats, some athletes stayed on stage, surrounding the band in a joyous celebration before security and volunteers intervened to clear the area.
Adding to the evening’s excitement, Hollywood star Tom Cruise made a dramatic entrance, descending from the top of the stadium to the theme song of his famous “Mission Impossible” franchise. Cruise mingled with athletes before performing a symbolic gesture by taking the Olympic flag from star gymnast Simone Biles and driving off in a motorcycle, completing the handover to Los Angeles in a memorable fashion.
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach delivered a heartfelt speech, reflecting on the unifying power of the Games. Sitting alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, Bach praised the athletes for their sportsmanship, stating, “The Games can create a cultural peace that inspires the world,” and highlighted the mutual respect among athletes despite geopolitical conflicts.
The 2024 Paris Olympics were notable for their spectacular integration of the city’s iconic landmarks into the Games. The Eiffel Tower and other renowned Parisian monuments served as stunning backdrops and, in some instances, venues for Olympic events, adding a unique charm to the Games and making them a memorable experience for spectators and participants alike.
As Paris bids farewell to its historic Olympic hosting, the challenge for Los Angeles will be to build upon this legacy and create an equally spectacular celebration for the next Summer Games. With Paris setting a high bar, the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics will have much to aspire to, but the French capital’s remarkable use of its cityscape and the enduring spirit of the Games will remain a high standard for future hosts.
