In a significant step toward expanding educational support, the Tamil Nadu government has extended the benefits of its successful Pudhumai Penn scheme to male students under a newly launched initiative, Tamil Pudhalvan. The scheme, which initially provided Rs 1,000 per month to college-going female students educated in government schools, now includes male students from State-run and government-aided schools.
Implemented by the Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department, the Tamil Pudhalvan scheme has been allocated a fund of Rs 360 crore. This initiative aims to benefit approximately 3.28 lakh male students across the state, offering them crucial financial assistance as they pursue higher education. The extension of this scheme follows an announcement made during the February budget session by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting students from all backgrounds.
According to the guidelines released by the department, a dedicated application form for the scheme is being designed and will be made available online. Both students and school managements have been directed to ensure that the Aadhar numbers provided in the application form are verified with the Educational Management Information System (EMIS). Students are also required to submit proof of their enrollment in the respective schools through their school identity cards.
Once the application is verified, it will be forwarded to the Higher Education Department, where a unique ID will be generated for each student. This ID will be communicated to the registered mobile number via SMS, allowing students to track the status of their application. The guidelines specify that, upon successful verification, the Rs 1,000 monthly stipend will be directly credited to the students’ bank accounts through the Social Welfare Department as soon as they begin their college education.
The introduction of Tamil Pudhalvan marks a significant milestone in Tamil Nadu’s efforts to ensure that all students, regardless of gender, receive the support they need to continue their education. By extending financial incentives to male students, the government aims to alleviate the financial burdens that often hinder access to higher education and to foster a more inclusive academic environment.
The new scheme’s implementation will be closely monitored, with the unique ID system providing a robust mechanism for tracking each student’s progress through the application process. This initiative is expected to not only boost college enrollment rates among male students but also contribute to the broader goal of educational empowerment across the state, say reports.
