Mumbai, Aug 17: The 2024 Duleep Trophy promises to be a high-stakes tournament as many of India’s cricketing stars look to regain form, prove their mettle, and secure a place in the national Test squad. The competition, now structured in a round-robin league format with four teams named Team A, Team B, Team C, and Team D, will serve as a crucial platform for players aiming to impress ahead of India’s upcoming Test matches.
Rishabh Pant: A Crucial Red-Ball ReturnAmong the key players, Rishabh Pant’s return to red-ball cricket stands out. Pant, who was once a regular fixture in India’s Test lineup, has been sidelined since a car accident in December 2022. After making his comeback in T20 cricket, the Duleep Trophy marks his first foray into the longer format since the incident. Playing for Team B alongside Ravindra Jadeja, Pant will aim to regain his rhythm and reinforce his position as India’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the upcoming home series against Bangladesh and New Zealand.

Ishan Kishan: A Bid for Redemption

On the other side, Ishan Kishan is eager to re-enter the good graces of the Indian selectors. After losing his spot in the national team last year, Kishan’s performance in the Duleep Trophy could determine his future in India’s Test squad. Leading Team D under Shreyas Iyer, Kishan faces an uphill battle but remains a player to watch as he vies for a place in the Indian team.

Ravindra Jadeja: A Steady Presence

Ravindra Jadeja, one of the few players assured of a spot in India’s Test squad, uses the Duleep Trophy to fine-tune his skills ahead of the home series. Jadeja, who last played red-ball cricket in March, will be a crucial player for Team A, led by Abhimanyu Easwaran. His participation in the tournament is less about securing a spot and more about staying in top form.

KL Rahul: Fighting Injuries and Competition

KL Rahul, who has struggled with injuries, finds himself in a precarious position. Despite his strong performances as a wicketkeeper-batter in the 2023 World Cup and the Test series in South Africa, his place in the Test squad is under threat with Pant’s return. Playing under Shubman Gill’s captaincy for Team A, Rahul will look to solidify his spot in the team.

Shreyas Iyer: Seeking a Comeback

Shreyas Iyer, who lost his central contract late last year due to poor performances, sees the Duleep Trophy as a chance for redemption. Captaining Team D, Iyer will aim to rebuild his reputation and re-establish himself as a key player in the Test squad.

Shubman Gill: The Emerging Leader

Shubman Gill, who has emerged as a successor to Cheteshwar Pujara in India’s top order, will captain Team A. Like Pant and Jadeja, Gill views the Duleep Trophy as an opportunity to shift back into Test mode and continue his upward trajectory in red-ball cricket.

Kuldeep Yadav: Strengthening His Case

Kuldeep Yadav, who has cemented his place as a first-choice spinner in limited-overs cricket, aims to extend his dominance into Test cricket. With Ravichandran Ashwin and Jadeja still the leading spinners in the format, Kuldeep’s performance in the Duleep Trophy could elevate his standing and push him closer to a regular spot in the Test squad.

Suryakumar Yadav: A Long-Awaited Test Comeback?

Suryakumar Yadav, India’s T20 captain and one of the most formidable batters in the format, remains on the fringes of the Test team despite his extensive first-class experience. At 33, with only one Test appearance to his name, Suryakumar is determined to make his mark in the longer format, playing for Team C under Ruturaj Gaikwad.

As the Duleep Trophy unfolds, these players’ performances will not only influence their immediate futures but also shape the composition of the Indian Test team for the crucial home series and the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
