Chennai: In an effort to prevent the entry of Mpox into Tamil Nadu, Chennai International Airport has initiated mass fever screening for all incoming passengers.
The move comes in response to a warning issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) about the rapid spread of Mpox in several African countries.
The virus was initially detected in Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda. However, it has since expanded beyond Africa, with cases now emerging in the Philippines, Sweden, and Pakistan. Concerned about the potential spread of the virus into Tamil Nadu, the state’s Health Department has ramped up preventive measures.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian personally inspected the fever screening operations at Chennai International Airport. During his visit, he engaged in discussions with airport officials to ensure that the screening process is thorough yet efficient, minimizing any inconvenience to passengers.
Minister Subramanian emphasized the importance of the screenings, noting that they are crucial in preventing the virus from gaining a foothold in the state. He assured the public that the Health Department is taking all necessary steps to keep Tamil Nadu safe, while also ensuring that travelers do not experience unnecessary delays due to the enhanced screening procedures.
The Health Department’s swift action underscores Tamil Nadu’s commitment to safeguarding public health and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. The state government has urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to any guidelines issued by health authorities.
