Mumbai, Aug 24; With less than a year remaining for India’s much-anticipated tour of the United Kingdom, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the fixtures for the five-Test series against England. This tour, which spans nearly two months, will mark the beginning of a new cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC). Set to take place across some of England’s most iconic cricket grounds, the series promises to be a significant chapter in the storied rivalry between these two cricketing giants.
India’s Test campaign will kick off at the Leeds Cricket Ground in Headingley, where the first match will be played from June 20 to 24. Following a week-long break, the action will shift to Birmingham’s Edgbaston Cricket Ground for the second Test, scheduled from July 2 to 6. The third Test will see the teams head to the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, from July 10 to 14. After another short break, the fourth Test will be held at Old Trafford in Manchester, from July 23 to 27. The tour will culminate with the fifth and final Test at The Oval in London, from July 31 to August 4.
This tour is especially significant for India, as the team seeks to conquer one of the last remaining bastions in world cricket. India has not won a Test series in England since 2007. The last tour, under the leadership of Virat Kohli in 2021, ended in a 2-2 draw, leaving Indian fans yearning for a historic victory. That series was fiercely contested, with both sides exchanging blows. India’s memorable victories at Lord’s and The Oval were overshadowed by a crushing defeat at Leeds, and rain played spoilsport in the first Test.
Now, with Rohit Sharma at the helm, the Indian team will look to finally break the 17-year-long drought. Sharma, who has already led India to series wins against Australia and England at home, faces one of the toughest challenges of his Test and captaincy career. The stakes are high, not just for Sharma, but for the entire Indian squad as they aim to make history on English soil.
In addition to the Test series, there is the possibility of India competing in the World Test Championship Final, which could precede the series. India currently leads the WTC standings with a win percentage of 68.51%, ahead of second-placed Australia. Although Australia has more points, India has played three fewer Tests, winning six out of their nine matches. If India secures a spot in the WTC Final, it could provide them with crucial momentum heading into the series against England.
As the cricketing world gears up for this blockbuster series, all eyes will be on the Indian team as they attempt to conquer one of their final frontiers in Test cricket. With iconic venues, high stakes, and the promise of thrilling cricket, the stage is set for an epic showdown between India and England in 2024.
