The Phase 2 Metro Rail Project in Chennai, one of the city’s most ambitious infrastructure endeavors, is making significant headway as tunneling operations advance on Route 3. Spanning a total of 116.1 kilometers, the project is remotely operated across three lines, including the crucial 45.4 km corridor from Madhavaram to Siruseri SIPCOT. This line alone features 28 underground stations and 19 elevated ones, showcasing the project’s scale and complexity.Tunneling for Route 3 commenced on September 9 last year, beginning at Chetpet station and moving towards Sterling Road. The first boring machine, aptly named Siruvani, has successfully completed a 703-meter tunnel between Chetpet and Sterling Road, marking a significant milestone in the project.
Following the success of Siruvani, a second boring machine was deployed to continue the tunneling work along the same route. As of now, 468 meters of additional tunneling have been completed between Chetpet and Sterling Road, with daily progress ranging from 3 to 4 meters.
Officials overseeing the project have expressed optimism about the pace of work, with the tunneling for this segment expected to be completed by November 2024. The consistent progress is a testament to the meticulous planning and execution of the tunneling operations, which are critical to the timely completion of the entire Phase 2 project
The Chennai Metro Phase 2 project is poised to significantly enhance the city’s public transportation network, offering faster, more efficient, and eco-friendly travel options for residents and commuters. Once completed, the Madhavaram-Siruseri SIPCOT line will serve as a vital link between key areas of Chennai, facilitating smoother transit across the city.
The project is also expected to alleviate traffic congestion on major roads and reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters. With its extensive network of underground and elevated stations, the Chennai Metro is set to become a cornerstone of the city’s urban infrastructure, contributing to the overall growth and development of the region.
As the Chennai Metro Phase 2 project continues to progress, the focus remains on maintaining the momentum in tunneling and other construction activities. The successful completion of the Chetpet-Sterling Road tunnel by November will mark a significant step forward in realizing the broader vision of a comprehensive metro network for Chennai. With the support of advanced technology and skilled personnel, the project is on track to meet its deadlines, bringing the city closer to a future of modern, efficient public transportation.
