In a bid to demonstrate the unity of the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu amidst recent political friction, the ruling DMK has announced a major rally involving its allies in Kancheepuram on September 28. The event, part of the DMK’s platinum jubilee celebrations, is expected to bring together leaders from all its coalition partners, including Makkal Neethi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan, who aligned with the DMK ahead of the last Parliamentary polls.The rally is seen as a significant show of strength for the DMK, particularly as the party seeks to reaffirm the cohesion of its alliance after recent tensions with the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan had recently adopted a conciliatory approach towards actor Vijay’s newly formed TVK and extended an invitation to the AIADMK for an anti-liquor conference, raising eyebrows among political observers. The AIADMK, in turn, responded favorably to the outreach, referring to it as a “wind of change.”
The rally will offer the DMK an opportunity to heal any rifts within its alliance and reassert its commitment to combating the communal agenda of the BJP. The event also comes at a time when one of its key allies, the VCK, has voiced aspirations for a share in government power in the future. By including Thirumavalavan among the 20 alliance leaders set to speak at the event, the DMK is signaling its intent to maintain unity and address any underlying tensions.
Several prominent leaders are scheduled to attend, including DK president K. Veeramani, Congress state president K. Selvaperunthagai, MDMK leader Vaiko, IUML leader Khader Mohideen, and MMK leader M.H. Jawahirullah. The rally will be presided over by DMK general secretary Duraimurugan and graced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
The gathering is expected to reinvigorate ties between the DMK and its allies, while also serving as a platform to collectively address key political issues in the state.
